Taking a Family Trip to Borneo? Here’s What You Should Know!

By: Atiqah Rahman Wyllie Adeng

In your opinion, what makes a great family vacation? I love water activities, at both the pool and the beach, and I also enjoy seeing wildlife. That’s why my trip to Borneo was so fantastic; it combined all the things that I love the most into one action packed trip! The following are tips on how to make the most out of your trip with Borneodream.com

There is a lot to do in Sabah, which is in the northeastern part of Borneo. When we arrived, we went right to Koto Kinabalu. Because there are several members of our family, and the trip was long, it was crucial that the flights were timed correctly. We didn’t want long connections and we wanted to be comfortable on the flight, so I invested some time into researching and selecting a good airline. Arrival time was also important; we wanted to get to Borneo in the early earning so that it would be almost time for the kids to go to bed.

Kota Kinabalu

If you’ve taken a trip on an A380, you know what I mean when I say that the aircraft is great for families. The plane doesn’t make a lot of noise, which makes it easy for children to settle down and sleep for a while. The plane also has great technology, including touch-screen televisions that play movies and video games. In addition, there is a side storage compartment where you can put your things. There were also plenty of bathrooms on our flight, so we didn’t have to worry about any “emergencies” occurring. We got to Kota Kinabalu in the evening and arranged transportation so that we were taken right to the Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort.

It is important to find a hotel where you can be comfortable and hang out with the kids. The Shangri-La was wonderful. The rooms were beautiful and there was a fun pool for everyone to play in. There was also a beach, where we spent a lot of time! The resort itself is big, and there isn’t a lot to do in the immediate area surrounding the hotel. However, there was plenty to eat and do at the hotel itself, so we didn’t think that was a problem. The staff was also great!

Staying at Shangri-La gives you a lot of options. You can take a shuttle and travel to both Kota Kinabalu and Rasa Ria. Shangri-La Tanjung Aru is about a sixty-minute journey from the hotel. However, it is worth the trip because it is close to the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park. There, you’ll find great beaches and amazing marine life.

Baby Orangutans

Rasa Ria has a nature reserve that cares for baby orangutans that do not have any other family. Once the little animals are ready, they are taken to the Sepilok Rehabilitation Center, where there is ample room for them to roam free.

In the wild, there are about twenty thousand orangutans left, which is why the work that this center does is so important. Sepilok is a great stop to add on your trip; it has the Kinabatangan River and is also close to Turtle Islands Park.

Turtle Island

If you love turtles, you have to check out Turtle Island, where you have the opportunity to see turtle landings. You can go at any time of the year, but you’ll get the best view in July, August, September and October.

Staying on Selingan Island overnight is the best course of action because most of what you want to see happen as it starts to get dark. The accommodations on the island are sufficient; there are no bells and whistles, but the property is clean. They try to keep numbers down, so you have to book well before you leave for your trip. There is a lot to see and do, so it is definitely worth a stop on your journey.

Why Borneo?

You’ll see amazing wildlife in Borneo, and it is the perfect destination for both kids and adults. The Shangri-La Rasa Ria has a lot of children’s activities as well as food for the kids. Give Borneo some serious thought for your next family vacation!
